Dagestan

Dagestan is an autonomous republic within Russia, located in the north-east Caucasus, just beside Chechnya. The capital is Makhachkala. Total population in 1989 was 1.77 million people. Of which indigenous peoples (some 30 distinct ethnic groups) number 1,444,795 inhabitants (81.6%). The main indigenous groups are: Avars 496,077 (28.0%), Dargins 280,431 (15.8%), Kumyks 231,805 (13.1%), Lezgins 204,370 (11.5% ), Laks 91,682 (5.2%), Tabasarians 78,196 (4.4%), Nogais 28,294 (1.6%), Rutuls 14,955 (0.8%), Aguls 13,791 (0.8%), Tsakhurs 5,194 (0.3% ) and others, as, for instance, Hunzib. Migrant groups are the Russians (165,940 p., 9.4%) and Azeris (75,463 p., 4.3%). Other peoples are the neighbouring Chechens (57,877 p., 3.3%), Jews (9,390 p., 0.5%), and the so-called Mountain Jews (3,649 p., 0.2%) that are speakers of Tats, an Iranian language. The complicated ethnic map of Dagestan favours the continuation of the actual statu quo as a Russian republic, but there appear to be three groups agitating for independent states of their own today, the Kumyk, Lezgins and Noghay (more info here). No measures regarding officiality of languages have been decreed in post-soviet Dagestan, seemingly to avoid ethnic unrest.

Dagestan

Dagestan Errusiako errepublika autonomoa da. Azalera: 50.300 km2. Biztanleak: 1.77 milioim1989an. Hiriburua: Makhatxkala (315.000 biz.). Etniak: Jatorrizko herriak (35 inguru etnia desberdin) biztanlegoaren %77.8 dira, honela banaturik: Avar 496.077 (%28.0), Dargin 280.431 (15.8%), Kumik 231.805 (%13.1), Lezginak 204.370 (%11.5), Lak 91.682 (%5.2), Tabasaran 78.196 (%4.4), Nogai 28.294 (%1.6), Rutul 14.955 (%0.8), Agul 13.791 (%0.8), Tsakhur 5.194 (%0.3 ) eta beste, hala nola Hunzib herria. Kanpoko herriak dira Errusiarrak (165.940 lagun, %9.4) eta Azeriarrak (75.463, %4.3). Beste herri batzuk: Txetxeniarrak (57.877, %3.3), Juduak (9.390, %0.5), eta Mendiko Juduak (3.649, %0.2) Tats hizkuntza mintzatzen duen taldea. Erlijioa: Dagestango herriak musulmanak dira, nagusiki sunitak. Dagestango mapa konplikatuak oraingo egoeraren jarraipenean laguntzen du, baina badira herri batzuk estatu independente baten aldeko mugimenduak garatu dituztenak: Kumik, Lezgin and Nogaiak. Dagestango herrien artean, hemen Avar eta Lezgin hizkuntzentzat ditugu taulak, eta Kaukasoko beste errepublika batean bizi diren Nogaientzat beste honetan. Dagestanen hizkuntzen ofizialtasuna ez dago arautua orain, ustez horrela arazo etnikoak saihestuko dituztelakoan.

Avar

Avars are the main ethnic group in Dagestan, numbering some 500,000 people (28.0% of total population). Avar is a North-East Caucasian language, that is spoken not only by the Avars, but by many other Dagestanis that use it as a communication language. The name Avaristan has been used to refer to their homeland valleys. The great hero of Caucasian resistance against Russia, the imam Shamil of the 19th century (revered by the indepedentist Chechens nowadays, for instance), was an Avar himself. Avars are sunni muslims.

Avar

Avar herria da Dagestango etnia nagusia, biztanlego osoaren %28 inguru, milioi erdi lagun inguru. Avar mintzaira hizkuntza kaukasiarra da (Ipar-Ekialdeko taldekoa), eta komunikazio hizkuntza nahiko hedatua da Dagestanen beste herri batzuen artean ere, etnien arteko komunikaziorako. Avartarren jatorrizko lurraldeari Avaristan ere esaten zaio. Errusiaren kontrako erresistentziako Kaukasoko irudi handia (gaurko Txetxenia independentean sinbolotzat dutena, adibidez), XIX. mendeko Xamil imam-a, avar bat zen. Avarrak musulman sunitak dira.

Lezgin

Some Lezgins advocate for the creation of an independent Lezgistan: a national formation to unite the Lezgin people of Dagestan and Azerbaijan. Presently between Dagestan and Azerbaijan, there are 466,000 Lezgin people. Dagestan is home to over half of them (where they make up 11.3% of the Dagestani population), 204,370 people. In Azerbaijan it is common that the label "Lezgin" is used to name other north Caucasian ethnic groups. Lezgin is North-East Caucasian language, heavily influenced by Turkic.

Lezgin

Lezginen artean batzuek Lezgistan independente bat osatzea eskatzen dute. Herrialde horrek Dagestango eta Azerbaijango lezginak elkartuko lituzke. Guztira 466.000 Lezgin inguru daude, eta Dagestanen erdiak bizi dira (errepublikako biztanleen %11.3, 204.370 lagun). Azerbaijanen, bestetik, "Lezgin" izena ematen zaie ipar Kaukasoko beste talde etnikoetakoak direnei. Lezginera hizkuntza kaukasiarra da (Ipar-Ekialdeko Kaukasoko taldekoa), turkieraren eragin handiarekin.
