Karelia

Karelia errepublika autonomoa da Errusiaren barruan. 172.400 km karratu and 800.000 biztanle, soilik %11,1 Kareliarrak. Errusiarrak dira nagusi (%71.3) eta Finlandiar gutxiengo bat ere bada erroldetan (%2.7); Vepsera ere hitz egiten da hegoaldean. 90.000 lagun inguru mintzo da Karelieraz (hizkuntza Fino-Ugriarra, finlandieratik hurbil), 145.000 laguneko talde etnikoan. Karelia

Karelia is an autonomous republic within Russia with 172,400 sq. km. and 800,000 inhabitants, only 11,1% of them Karelian. Russians are the vast majority (71.3%) and there is also a minority censed as Finnish (2.7%). Vepsian is also spoken on the south. About 90,000 people speak Karelian (Uralic language close to Finnish) out of an ethnic group of 145,000 in Russia. Some Karelians live outside the Karelian republic, south of lakes Onega and Ladoga, and around Novgorod. Also in Tver region.

In our table we have also put names in the Finnish variety of Karelia. More information about the Finns of Russia here. So far we only know of two names in Karelian outside Karelia: Piiteri and Moskova (St. Peterburg & Moscow)
