German minorities in the Alps
Alpeetako gutxiengo alemanak

German minorities in the Alps

There are several German-speaking minorities in the Alps. In Italy, there is the well-known region of South Tirol, majoritarily German, but which is a minoritized community in the whole of Italy. Besides that, there are other distinct German communities scattered: the Walser in the Aosta Valley of Italy and nearby valleys; the Gurinerdeutsch of Bosco Gurin, a German enclave in the Italian-majority canton of Ticino (Switzerland); the Cimbrian communities of Trentino; the related Mocheno-German speaking communities of Fersina valley (the southernmost German-speaking area in Italy); the Bavarian dialect speaking enclaves of Friuli province (Italy), and the remnants of German communities of Slovenia.

Gurinerdeutsch

Spoken on the single town of Bosco Gurin (German: Gurin), Switzerland, this High German speaking community has remained isolated from other German speaking areas over centuries, though now influence from Swiss varieties of German (Zurich and so on) has been felt. Bosco Gurin is located in Ticino, the Italian-speaking canton of Switzerland. Originally the Gurinerdeutsch came from Valais canton in the middle ages, and their dialect is close to the Walser-German spoken in Italy.

Bavarian in Italy

Several Bavarian - High German communities are located in Northern Italy. Cimbrian (Zimbrisch) is spoken around Trento and in Veneto province by some 3,800 speakers. The Mócheno German speakers (some 1,900) live in three towns of Fersina Valley (Trentino), and are the southernmost German community of Italy. There are also several Alpine towns of Friuli that speak German. Friuli is home to other minorities also (check here).

German in Slovenia

In Slovenia, there was an old Bavarian-speaking community located around Gotschee, but most Germans there were expelled after World War II. However, some remained, as well as in other two "languages islands" in Northern Slovenia: Rut and Sorica. These communities of Slovenia had no relationship with other German communities of old Yugoslavia.
