Vepse

Vepse herria Ladoga, Onego eta Belozero lakuen artean bizi da. Garai sobietarreko errusifikazioa eta zapalkuntza latza izan da (1937-1987) baina orain beren identitate etnikoa eta kultura berreraiki nahian dabiltza. 1989an 12.142 Vepse zeuden (hiztunak: %52). Badute gogoa Vepseen eskualde guztiak barruti autonomo batean biltzeko, baina Errusiako Estatuaren eta agintari lokalen oztopoak daude tartean. Karelian bederen 1994tik "herri komunitate nazional" bat daukate, Xeltozero izeneko tokian: 14 herrixkatan 3,773 lagun bizi dira, eta horietarik 1.588 (%41.8) Vepseak dira.

Vepsian

Vepsians are the the easternmost Baltic-Finnic people. Their homeland lies between the lakes Ladoga, Onego and Belozero. After half a century (about 1937-1987) of Russification and social oppression, the Vepsians are rebuilding their ethnic identity and cultural institutions. In 1989 there were 12,142 Vepsians (speakers: 52%). Nowadays there is spreading a new idea to unify ail the Vepsian areas into an autonomous district (there is resistance by Russian state and local authorities). In Karelia since January 1994, there exists a "national village community" at Sheltozero: in 14 villages and hamlets of that community there live 3,773 inhabitants of whom 1,588 (41.8%) are Vepsians.
