Can trace my line back to Ansel Godfrey (know there is more than one) who died in Laurens during CW and was Charter Member / Deacon / buried in Union Baptist/Old Quaker Cem. I have a list that shows the line to include John Richard Godfrey (b1689 d1738)married to Charity Ann Culberson (b1694). Children James C. Charity Anne & Mary Louise. James Clarence Godfrey (b1718 d1758) m Mahaly Boyd (b1719) Children Anne Louise Mary Isabel Benjamin & Thomas. My Father was named after James Clarance. Supposedly Benjamin was Ansel's father altho my list given to me by a cousin is only one that shows this. My father told me years ago before I ever had this info was that his mother named him after an ancestor and picked name out of an old family Bible. These 3 men may be our "missing Links" in the family. Does anyone have any information or have a clue? Thanks

Am looking to prove the parents of Henry Thomas (Tandy) Willard born 1888 in Charleston, SC. Tandy's death certificate shows his parents as Si Willard and Lizzie Wiggins both born in SC. My father says his grandfather's name was Sion / Zion and that both Si and Lizzie were dead (at separate times) before Tandy was 10 years old. He also says that the family lived in Laurens Co. (possibly Enoree) and that there was a cousin by the name of Creighton Kennedy he remembered from childhood. There were at least 2 siblings (he says 1/2, so Lizzie must have died first and Si remarried) named James and Lilla. These were taken in by a Will Ramage (friend/family?) and moved to a small town in southwestern Arkansas call Bengin (Bingen) where they were raised. Tandy remained in Arkansas all his life as a cattleman and raised his family there. The other siblings seem to have moved into Texas and raised their families there. There is next to no information about this family that survived Tandy's childhood and any relatives I know are long since gone. I have found a Sion and Elizabeth listed with several children in "Scuffletown" on an old census before Tandy's birth, but do not know if this is the right family. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ann Parsons married John Storm in 1798 in Carter County, TN. according to information in her husband's Revolutionary War Pension papers They were living in what has ended up being Greene Co, IN in the early 1800. A historical note which is undocumented stated that Ann's parents moved from Indiana to Alabama. This document stated that Ann was born in South Carolina. The 1850 census states that she was born in VA. She and John named their children Leah, Martha, Margaret, Joseph,Peter,(after his father)Harrison,Mary Ann, Ann, Hannah,Washington..and somewhere there is a mention of a child named Susanna. Could Ann's father be Joseph, who moved to Jefferson Co. Ala in the early 1800? John Storm, Ann's husband, served as a Dragoneer in the Virginia Militia under Major Major Parsons (that is not a typo, that was his rank and name)in the Revolutionary War. They fought in South Carolina as well as Virginia. Any information on this line would be greatly appreciated. Jefferson County records state that Joseph Parsons and other family members named Parson were from Pendleton District, SC

Pope, Mississippi
I am a descendant of William Bailey, who took land in Laurens County, S.C. in 1767. He had several children and one of his sons was named James, James had several children and one of his daughters was named Luvicia. Luvicia married a cousin named William Alford Bailey. Willim Alford Bailey's parent were John and Sarah Bailey. I do not know who John's father was and there are two opinions, one opinion says he was Zachariah Bailey Sr.'s son, while another says his father's name was William Bailey. John was born 3-21-1774 and his wife's name was Sarah. William Alford and Luvicia Bailey Bailey had several children already when they move to Mississippi in the middle 1850s. There son, William Holcomb Bailey, was my great grandfather. His wife, Emma Margaret Coleman., was my great grandmother. They had six children and their son James Richard Bailey was my grandfather.

Henry (W.S.L.) COOPER born 1818 was in Laurens Co. before 1842. Who are his parents and where did he come from if not Laurens Co.? He married Dolly Martha CULBERTSON in 1842, daughter and probably oldest child of John (Pleasant?) CULBERTSON and his wife Elizabeth. John CULBERTSON and Henry COOPER left Laurens Co. about 1847 and took their families to Blount Co. AL. Did other Laurens Co. families leave to go to AL at this time? Looking for any information on these families or others who may have left Laurens about this time to go west.

Doing research on Attaway family in South Carolina. Early censuses have many in the Laurens area. This family loved to use family names over and over--William, John, Joseph, Goodwin and Chesley, to name a few. I know that Elisha Attaway and Lettice Barton had about 12 children: William, Harley, Jesse, Gouley, John, Joseph, Robert, Anna, Lettice, James, Elizabeth and Betsey. The oldest, William may have married three times: Martha, Charity Goodwin and Elizabeth. They had several children including Shubal, Simeon, William. I am most interested in tracing John Attaway's lineage (b. about 1763), Joseph's (about 1765) and Robert (about 1767). I have no other information about these three sons of Elisha and Lettice. Any help would be appreciated.

I am researching the Joseph Parsons and Alcey Goolsby family tree. They lived and raised a family in the Laurens Co., SC area between 1780's and 1830's. The family later moved west settling in Jefferson Co.,AL for a while. I am seeking information about the family while they were there. Captain Sam Parsons,a son of Joseph's, died in Laurens Co, SC. How would I find out which cemetery and where the old homeplace might have been?

I have pretty reliable data on the Holland line back to Anthony who arrived in America 15 Dec 1658. Haven't been able to connect to an Irish/English line. The earliest Fulton I have is Thomas who came to America in 1792, probably from Ireland. His dau. Mary Ann was b. on the Atlantic crossing, 3 weeks old when they arrived in America. Mary Ann m. John Holland, 4 July 1809. Their dau. Lucinda b. 14 June 1810, m. Joel T. Foster. b. 7 Oct. 1808, maybe in SC. It is the Foster line that I can't find before Joel. Does anyone connect with this family? His dau., Mary Ann Clementine was my ggrandmother.

My great great grandfather moved to Salem SC from Laurens County SC sometime in the mid 1800s. His name was either James Harris or John Harris Abercrombie. I understand he married once while in Laurens Co. and his wife died. He remarried here either at Old Pickens or in Oconee County. I also understand that he was the son of one of 3 brothers who came to Laurens Co. in 1820, but this is word of mouth information from family sources who aren't sure. I know he had one son here, James Furman, who died in 1945. Any help will be appreciated, H.A.

Looking to share information on the descendants of Francis GLENN and Margaret SIMPSON. Francis was born 1771 in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, and immigrated to Laurens County in 1788. His parents are unknown at this time to me any information concerning his parents would be appreciated. Margaret was the 2nd. child of Alexander SIMPSON and Elizabeth BARRE. Francis and Margaret GLENN had 10 children: Alexander W., James, John, Elizabeth, Francis, Rebecca, Margaret, Francis Marion, David M. and Simpson Dunlap GLENN. James GLENN, the 2nd child (my GGG Grandfather), married a Mary HENRY, whom I believe was the daughter of Alexander HENRY and Elenor Elizabeth FLEMMING. Any additional information concerning this HENRY family would be greatly appreciated. James and Mary GLENN'S 2nd child, Eleanor Jane GLENN, married a Spencer F. SMITH from Laurens County around 1849. Spencer F. SMITH, to the best of my knowledge was a son of a Rev. Noah SMITH, whom I believe was ! a Presbyterian minister in Laurens County in the early 1800's. Spencer F. SMITH was a brother-in-law of my GG Grandfather, Benjamin Franklin GLENN. The latest information I have been able to find on Spencer F. SMITH and his family is their appearance on the 1870 Floyd County (Rome), Georgia, federal census. Legend has it that they removed to Alabama, but I cannot find anything to prove or disprove this. If anyone reading this post knows anything about where the Spencer F. SMITH family finally settled and died I would be eternally grateful if you would please let me know. Any information on the GLENN family and on the HENRY family of Laurens County would be much appreciated as well. Thanks!

Am researching my ancestor, AUSTIN MOORE, born about 1774. He died in 1831 in Hopkins County, Ky. He married Nancy. I found in a newspaper article that his daughter, CASSANDRA MOORE, was born in Laurens, S.C. in 1798. She was married in Christian County, KY in 1813. There is speculation that this family followed or accompanied a JESSIE GATLIN II and his family to Kentucky. Austin Moore's son, ALFRED MOORE, married Rebecca Gatlin in about 1817 in Kentucky. Other children born to Austin and Nancy were: BRYANT MOORE, SUSAN M. MOORE, WILLIAM MOORE, COUNCIL MOORE, JAMES DUNCAN MOORE AND NANCY I. MOORE. If anyone has any information about a family that fits this description, I would be very happy to hear from you. Thanks. Joyce

Interested in finding out about the Ferguson and Young families of Jack's Township Clinton. As of the 1880 Laurens County Census, The Young family included Bob Young (Possibly Bass) born 1840 and his wife Laura. They had several Children, however my Great Grandfather Arthur Young was 6 years old at the time of this census. On the Ferguson side of the family, I am looking for information on Tom Ferguson, born 1839 and his wife Jane, born 1850. They too had several children, however my great grandmother, Eliza Ferguson was one year old at the time of this census. I also know that my Great Great Great Grandmother,Patrice or Patience Henry was 50 years old at the time of the 1880 Census and lived with the Fergusons. I believe that my ancestors took the Ferguson and Young names after slavery ended because of numerous references to Ferguson and Young families I have found which date back to the time that Laurens County was settled. I would similarly be interested in ! knowing who was the Patriarch of each "settling" Ferguson and Young Family, where did they originate, Scotland to Virginia to SC etc.

Could you or anyone else working with you tell me how the early townships of Clinton were laid out or tell me where to find such a layout? I have determined from looking through the 1880-1920 Census forms for the county that there appear to be about 4 or 5 such townships to include The Town of Clinton, Hunter, Jacks, Dial, and Cross Hill Townships. Is this the case. Sincerely
Jerry Martino

This one's a long shot - I'm trying to break brick wall with my gggrandfather, John Walker. According to census records of Telfair Co. GA, where he died, his place of birth was Laurens Co. (no state given) about 1830. He first turns up in Houston Co. GA marrying Mary Towns in 1842 I can find nothing on him in Laurens Co., GA, which is near both Houston & Telfair Cos. So maybe, just maybe the census taker didn't understand that the Laurens Co. was SC, not GA. Does anyone in the Sylvanus Walker or other Walker line out of Laurens SC have anything on a John Walker who went to GA? A couple of clues: he named one son Joel & another Bennett. Also, on another family line, I'm looking for ancestry of Mary Harvey, b. abt. 1800 Effingham Co. GA, m 1st a Loper or Abbott, 2nd Rev. James Williamson.

August 27,1846 he married Elliott (daughter of Robert Ellison, of Tennessee and had ! 9 children, Eliza,James P., Della, Frances, Emma, John, Bettie, Thomas, and rosalie. Mr Hobbs had been a Free Mason since 1846. These are all notes I received from another person looking into the Hobbs families and shared them with me. I am seeking information, especially the location, about a house named "Belfast" where WILLIAM PLANT lived in Newberry District about 1800 to 1830. Belfast was not the name of a town. It was the name of the house where PLANT lived. I understand it is a lovely old two-story house that is now owned by a company who uses it for clients as a hunting lodge.

Seeking info on a JAMES WALDROP, born about 1750 and died about 1810 in Laurens Cty., SC. JAMES WALDROP was married to ELIZABETH(last name unknown). Land records indicate he was son of MICHAEL WALDROP(IV). It is also thought that JAMES WALDROP had brothers named Michael, William, Thomas, Luke and John. No proof however. Records show where JAMES WALDROP lived in Laurens Cty.,on land given to him by MICHAEL WALDROP and indicate that a MATTHEW WALDROP lived close to him or even on his land. It is thought that this MATTHEW WALDROP was possibly A son to JAMES WALDROP or at least a close relative. I have been searching for info on this JAMES WALDROP, wife ELIZABETH for ever it seems. There is bound to be someone else out there who traces their line back to him. I have lots of Waldrop info on descendants, and would be happy to exchange info with anyone of this line.

Indian Raid in 1769 known as the AUSTIN RAID. Does anyone have any details on the Austin Raid that took place during 1769 in the Laurens County, SC area. My ggggg grandfather Samuel Cobb lost an wife (unknown Cobb) and a daughter believed to have been named Elizabeth Cobb. It is my understanding that the Austin Family Farm was the center of the Raid and hence the name AUSTIN RAID. I need information to confirm that there was a raid in 1769 and that Samuel Cobb lost his spouse and daughter. I also am searching for information on his first wife's name. I have reason to believe that it might be RANSOM. His second wife (approx 1780 was a Judah Peake). Samuel Cobb and Family moved on to Owen County, KY in 1795 but there were three brothers that remained behind. Henry, John and Asa. Asa followed a few years later. There were two sons buy the first wife (unknow) The oldest was Ransom Cobb and the other was Humphrey Cobb. It is known that Humphrey moved on to DeKalb Co. GA. Any information would be appreciated. I have some 16,000 persons in my database. THANKS!!!

Thomas J. Casadevall
My great-great grandfather was William W. Grumbles of South Carolina. Over the past year I have become interested in tracing my family history. Recently my father and I visited Laurens County, South Carolina where we still have relatives (the Finch family). While visiting the Durbin Church near Fountain Inn, we discovered that W.W. Grumbles was my great great grandfather. He was the father of Nancy (Nannie) Grumbles who was the mother of my grandmother, Cora Lee Finch. Ms. Finch married my grandfather, James Casadevall at Spartansburg, at the end of World War I. The family moved to New Jersey. In particular, I have become most interested in my great great grandfather's experience in the Civil War. He fought in the 3rd South Carolina infantry and was wounded at the battle of South Mountain (Fox's Gap engagement I believe). I also believe that the 3rd was made up of men largely from Laurens County. I would be very interested in any additional information about the Grumbles family and about the history of the 3rd South Carolina infantry.

Ralph D. Simpson
St. Cloud, Minnesota
In working on my family's genealogy, I started with William Simpson who was born in Belfast, Ireland in 1729. He had five children also born in Belfast, Ireland: Alexander (1748), Robert (1750), Colonel John Simpson (17 November 1751), James Simpson (1753), and Nancy Simpson (1759). (Perhaps there were more children.) The first three siblings of William Simpson had children born in BELFAST, Laurens County, South Carolina.
I've looked at the South Carolina map, and I cannot find Belfast, South Carolina. For example, the first child of Col. John Simpson was Jane Simpson, born 18 Jun 1781 in Belfast, Laurens County, S.C. Coming from this line was William Dunlap Simpson who was governor of S.C. in 1879-1880, and is buried in Laurens County. Richard Franklin Simpson, a U.S. Representative, was born in Laurens County but practiced law, died, and was buriend in Pendelton, S.C.
My questions are the following:

(1) Was there at one time a Belfast, South Carolina?
(2) Is there any information available regarding the first Simpsons in Laurens, South Carolina? When and where did they first arrive in the U.S. Did they have crown landgrants?
(3) Are there any genealogical records available regarding the Simpsons in Laurens, South Carolina?
(4) Is Simpsonville part of Laurens, S.C.
My great, great grandfather was Charles Simpson who married Rachel Holland in Laurens County, S. C.

Brown w/o John Brown died in 1880, this means she was buried on this location BEFORE the church was erected. Any one have a clue??

I am writing in hopes of confirming information that I have obtained by word of mouth and by some research. My Great-Great Grandfather Henry Alexander Nesbitt was supposely born in Laurens Co SC on or about 1810. He later married Serena Garrett who was also born in Laurens Co SC about the same time. What I am trying to confirm is if in fact Henry Alexander's father was James(Nesbit/Nesbitt/Nisbet) He was supposely born in Scotland in the late 1700's. He supposely married Sarah Frew in Ireland before coming to USA landing in Charleston. Any help on telling me how to confirm this would be greatly appreciated. If in fact this is true I will have confirmation to carry to a Church in Covingtion GA which has records on the family for the past 16-20 generations. Thank You Wayne Gibbs

In the "Peter Ball" family genealogy of Cobb Co., Ga., a grand daughter of Peter Ball, Effergenia Ball, born 1860, married a W. A. Harden. I do not have a marriage date, however, a grandson of Peter Ball, one Thomas S.Ball, accompanied Mr. Harden to Tarves, Lake Co., Fl. in 1891 to establish a tobacco and orange growing operation. This is established by family correspondence in my possession. Could this be a son of your Eli Harden from Cobb Co., Ga.?

Looking for the parents of Kitty GARY who married Addison Martin(b. prob 1822-1832) then a Col. Wash Watts after Addison Martin died. I have a large store of Gary data but no Kitty connection. Addison Martin was the son of Daid Martin who married Nancy Agnes Teague daughter of Abner Teague and Millie Gary. Here is the only reference I have of Addison: "David Martin of this family stopped at Martin's Depot, just two miles from my home, as a girl, now known as Joanna. David Martin and his wife had two children-- Addison Martin who married Kitty Gary and Lavinia Martin who married Dr. B. S. James. David Martin's property was divided in half-- east side of the road to Dr. James and left side to Addison Martin. Dr. James and family moved to Union County, S.C. Addison Martin died and his widow married Col. Wash Watts and they had six children. Seven children of Addison Martin, six of Col. Wash Watts (by a previous marriage-R.B.M.), and six of their own, 19 in all. I went to school with some of all of them. I have heard my father say that Addison Martin was the finest citizen of Laurens County. He quoted him on all occasions. Addison Martin died before I could remember but I felt I knew him." I am looking for information on Sarah Jane (or just Jane) Collins, born Jan, 1812 in Laurens, Laurens Co., South Carolina. She married Thomas L. Wood (b. 1805 in Laurens Co., SC). Thomas L. Wood was the son of John L. (Jackie) Wood...who was from the family of Learwood's...some stayed Learwood, some changed it to Larwood, and this family inadvertantly shortened it to L.Wood, then to Wood. Thomas and Sarah Jane started their family in SC, then moved to Mississippi (I believe Winston Co.) by 1850, where they show up on the census (she used the first name Jane on that census.) They had a rather large family, lived a long time, and died in MS (I believe Atalla Co.) She died in 1893, and he died in 1872. I don't have any information on her parents or siblings. I would appreciate any leads that I can find.

Kellett / Kellet / Babb
Looking for a James H. Kellett who married Elizabeth Babb. They had six children John A., Mary A., James O., Francis M., William M., and Hannah C. and they were all born in Laurens Co., SC between 1846-1856. James H. Kellett was born Dec. 1820. I do not know of his parents. I know there is a will from Joseph Kellett that has the name James Kellett in it, but I am unsure if he may have been a son or a grandson. James and his family left SC in 1860 (as the story goes) and went to Kentucky and changed their last name to Marion. If anyone has any information on this family I would greatly appreciate it.

Fleet W. died there about 1835. His widow, Elizabeth was alive in 1840. Any information about this family will be appreciated.
