On Saturday, March 30, 1996, a new class of Wolverines claimed the National title in front of 13,330 fans in the Cincinnati Riverfront Coliseum. The championship marked the eighth NCAA title -- an NCAA record -- and the first since 1964. Number 9 center, Brendan Morrison scored the heart-stopping winning goal at 3:35 of overtime off of an assist from both Greg Crozier and Billy Muckalt. It was truly "mind-blowing" as my roommate puts it. I'm sure the majority of the state of Michigan would agree. Morrison was named the Hockey Championship's Most Outstanding Player, and Morrison, Halko, and Turco were named to the All-Tournament Team.

Sadly enough, the season came to a close on Thursday evening. I don't think I've seen a game like this all season. BU totally dominated our Wolverines tonight. We just came out and had a bad game. It's a real shame that it had to happen on our Championship run. I truly believe we are the better team though. BU took us out of our game and the crowd kept us there. I've never been in such a non-Michigan atmosphere before. The entire arena, minus the three or so sections of Michigan fans, was cheering (loudly) against us. I think if there had been more crowd support, our team may have been able to get back into a rhythm. Senior Warren Luhning scored the first goal of the game, putting us on top towards the end of the first period. However, BU scored three goals and sent us into the end of the third period down by two. We pulled Marty and Brendan was able to put a glimmer of hope back in our eyes with less than a minute left in the game. However, this late effort proved to be useless as the Terriors defeated us and left a sick feeling in the stomachs of all Michigan players and fans. But to anyone who might be feeling disappointed, or upset, keep in mind what Brendan had to say when he accepted his Hobey Baker award on Friday: "We have nothing to hang our heads about...sometimes the best team doesn't win." We hear ya Brendan. Good luck to all the graduating seniors. We'll miss you guys a lot. And to the rest of the Wolverines...we can't wait to see you back in action next year! Go Blue!

For those of you who are not familiar with the prestigious Hobey Baker Award, it is the hockey equivilant to the Heisman Award in football. Friday at 4:30pm Brendan Morrison made hockey history and became the first Michigan Wolverine to capture this title. Check out my pictures of the ceremony which was held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Milwaukee. It was an amazingly touching speech Brendan made, bringing even himself to tears. We're proud of you Brendan.
