When James Preston was a boy of 9 years, his father left to fight in the Civil War. James, being the oldest boy  of the children had to take over the responsibilities of a man's job.  He told how he had to plow the soil and the plow knocking him in the chest because he was only a boy.  He told how the soldier's came and plundered through the house for food and blankets.  James' sister,  Nannie, quilted several blankets preparing for the winter; when the soldiers came and gathered up all of her quilts, she met them by the door and grabbed two of the quilts back.  He also told how they had to bury their meat in holes in the ground, full of ashes.  His father was taken prisoner during the war and returned only after the war was over.  He was practically starved to death.  He regained his health and returned to farming.  He lived to the age of 94.  He is buried in Ironton, OH.

James' family was from Mercer County, WV.  James' mother died before his sixteenth birthday and he left out on his own when he turned sixteen.  James and his father had a falling out over some land - it seems that James was told if he cleared some land, his father would deed it to him to start his own farming.  James cleared the land, but his father deeded it to a half brother.  Thus, James left to never return.  He came to Kanawha and Fayette County.  His father visited James quite often.  James returned home only when his father was dying.

He was arrested and went to three of the worst Northern Prisons there were. He went back to KY after taking the oath and joined the 14th KY Union  and served under the same man that arrested him and the same cmmander that had ordered him sent to the prisons in the north.

His P.O.W. records as a CSA P.O.W. list him as 5' 5" tall, black eyes, light hair, dark complexion.
His muster and desciptive roll for the 14th KY Union list him as 5' 5" tall, black eyes, light hair, light complexion. He had just gotten out of the northern P.O.W. camps and this might be part of the reason for the listing of his light complexion. His dark complexion on his intial P.O.W. description may have been his previous 1 year and 1/2 service in the field. He was 15-16 years old when he first joined the CSA, 17 years old when taken prisoner and sent to prison on 4/30/1863-5/13/1863, released from on Oath on 1/10/1864 at Point Lookout, MD at 17 years old, and joined the 14th Ky Union side at Louisa, KY on  5/4/1864 for 3 years. He was 18 years old in 1865 when he was mustered out. He was lost or taken prisoner at a skirmish near Atlanta on 8/8/1864. He was returned to the commander at Louisa, Ky on 1/20/1865 and served until 7/8/1865 while the others were mustered out on 1/30/1865.

An Ambros Wadkins filed for a Civil War pension application on June 25, 1885 in KY. It listed A & C companies of the 14th KY as the units served in. The application number was 543292. He probably died in 1885 or early 1886. His son and daughter married in 1885 and 1886 Carter Co.,KY. His daughter Easter Jane Wadkins moved to WV with her first husband
Albert Gray and reported her mother's death in Fayette Co.,WV on 8/17/1887.
