In 1941, Olivia de Havilland was nominated for her second Oscar for "Hold Back the Dawn". This classic romance also starred Charles Boyer and Paulette Goddard. The next year, Olivia starred with Bette Davis in "In This Our Life". She played Roy Timberlake, who was victimized by her sister, Stanley (Bette). That same year, she played Henry Fonda's wife in the comedy "The Male Animal".
In 1943, Olivia did her part for the war effort by playing herself in "Thank Yor Lucky Stars". This morale booster starred Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davis, Eddie Cantor, Errol Flynn, John Garfield, Joan Leslie, Ida Lupino, and many more. That same year, Olivia starred in the comedy, "Princess O'Rourke". She played Princess Maria, who was spending an uneventful trip in Mew York City, when she decides to go to San Francisco. But she's so nervous about taking a plane, so she takes too many pills to calm her. Inclement weather forces the plane to go back to New York, and the heavily drugged princess is left in the care of the pilot, played by Robert Cummings. This delightful movie also stars Charles Coburn, Jack Carson, Jane Wyman, and Gladys Cooper.
In 1943, Olivia was tired of playing too sweet to be wholesome parts, and demanded better parts from Warner Brothers. In response, they put her under a suspension. Olivia angrily sued the studio. It was a long process, but it was worth it. The court ruled in Olivia's favor, stating that Warner's couldn't treat its stars as pieces of property. Olivia triumphantly returned to the screen in 1946 in the tear-jerker, "To Each His Own". Olivia played Josephine Norris, a woman who has an illegitimate child during World War I. She wants only the best for her son, and decides to give him a better life, even if it means giving him up. Olivia was nominated for her third Oscar for this magnificent movie, and won!

Olivia starred some more movies in 1946. The first was "Devotion", a story of the Bronte sisters, co-starring Paul Henreid. After this, she made the noir thriller, "The Dark Mirror", co-starring Lew Ayres and Thomas Mitchell. She plays two roles in this classic suspense story. It's a must-see!
