Julius "Slick" Johnson
Back in the late 1970's, I attended an extra-distance Late Model race at Sunshine Speedway in Pinellas Park, Fla. The added prize money brought with it a lot of out-of-town drivers and the racing was always very competitive and very fast. I sat behind an attractive young family that I quickly figured out was the wife and children of racer Slick Johnson, after overhearing their conversation (a dispute with the track officials over the legality of the rear deck spoiler on his Camaro, which had to be removed). Beautiful little blonde-haired children, boys and girls. They sat and waved their checkered flags furiously and cheered for their beloved father- "YEA SLICK JOHNSON! HOORAY SLICK JOHNSON!! GO SLICK JOHNSON!!!"...
Jump ahead several years, I opened up a sports publication and read the unfortunate news that Julius "Slick" Johnson had been killed in a crash at Daytona International Speedway in an ARCA race during 1990 Speed Week. My thoughts immediately raced back to that night I sat behind his beautiful family at Sunshine Speedway, his wife and little children. My heart goes out to the family, friends and loved ones of Slick Johnson over their loss. I'll never forget him or his family, and I dedicate
"Pops' Racing Site" in his memory.
