István Szabó (JPG, 10 KB)

A leading director of the Hungarian new cinema. A graduate of Budapest's Academy of Film Art, he drew attention at various international festivals in the early 60s with three attractive shorts, then turned to feature films with equal success. His Confidence (1979) won the Berlin Film Festival Silver Bear, and for Mephisto (1981) he received the Hungarian Film Critics Award, an award for best screenplay at Cannes, and the Oscar for best foreign film. His work is characterized by both technical proficiency and innocent charm.
