Welcome to Fleet Hospital Nine
NR FLEET HOSPITAL 500 COMBAT ZONE NINE
A Brief Command History
Fleet Hospital Nine was initially formed at the Seattle Naval Reserve Center in October 1987. Embodying a bold and novel concept of deployment, the unit was tasked with "Providing Comprehensive Medical Support to forces engaged in combat operations" through training to erect and staff a 500-bed Field Hospital. From this beginning a Headquarters Detachment was formed, followed by the establishment of twenty additional detachments located in cities throughout five Northwest States. During its first years, Fleet Hospital Nine provided support to several national and international inter-service Medical Exercises. By FY-89 the Fleet Hospital Operations Training Command (FHOTC) was created at Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton,CA and more than 400 hospital personnel received their specialized training at that time. When Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait in the summer of 1990, seventy Fleet Hospital Nine personnel were mobilized for service in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm. Within its short history the hospital has repeatedly distinguished itself. Of the Fleet Hospitals, it was the first to pass its initial triennial inspection, and continues to be a leader in mobilization readiness. Additionally,
TWO of its former Commanding Officers have been promoted to Flag rank: RADM James Fowler and RADM Jay Nyboer.
