The following is an investigation of available resources on the Australian
Share Market. The investigation dealt with obtaining information that would be
of value to individuals planning to invest in the share market. It was decided
that the resources be limited to only that which is relevant to the local Australian
Share Market.
The range of material investigated included such things as on-line
beginners' guide to the Stock Market, Research and Advice on particular
company shares and the Australian Stockmarket's future, up-to-date share
market prices, commentary on individual stocks and the overall market, and
links/references to Stockbrokers.
METHOD USED FOR INVESTIGATION:
To investigate the resources that are available for someone wishing to invest
in the share market, the following search of:
Share + Market + online + Brokerage + share + market + prices + investment
+ Australian + Stock + Exchange*
was done with the AltaVista, Excite, HotBot, Lycos, and WebCrawler search
engines. This generated about 2 to 290,000 results, depending upon
which search engines were used. Of these, only about 50 to 100 sites of each
search were sifted through, as by website 60 onwards, the Uniform Resource
Locators (URLs) became less relevant. Most international URLs were not considered
as they dealt with overseas investment ventures.
*Note the "+" between words, used to find only URLs that contain all of
these words. Otherwise, all sites that happened to have any of the words
listed above would have been returned.
Any URLs considered relevant, were viewed briefly. If determined useful,
their addresses were recorded. Another method was to investigate links from these
pages. Once all the searches were sifted through, a list of approximately 30 relevant URLs
was generated. This list was analysed in more detail, and formed the collection below.

A page definitely worth visiting, as it is the actual Australian Stock Exchange
Page. It contains:
- A very good and useful step-by-step beginners' guide to shares and
the stock exchange;
- An excellent Broker Referral Service, with good information on each broker;
- Up-to-date prices/market news;
- Basic, but good interactive on-line games;
- And an Australian Overview, with specific information on the Australian
Stockmarket.
2. "Phillips Henderson Ward Ltd., Stockmarket - PHW, (Online); (Thursday 10 April 1997, Thursday 10 April 1997)", Available:

A good site, with extensive coverage on most major stock prices (up-dated
4 times a day). It is well worth visiting for its stock prices, as it gives
the ASX code, stock price, company profit, % yield, P/E, % franked and an
excellent comment about the companies' share market performance and actions.

This site, being that of the My Money web pages, has a very good beginner's guide
to shares. Along with excellent sections covering:
- The future of shares (i.e. short, medium and long term views);
- Discount entitlements to share holders;
- Brokers and their fees;
- And good coverage on the ins and outs of shares.
4. "Warren Butt, Australian Stockmarket Page, (Online);

A very good links site, covering topics as: Market Information, Stock Quotes,
Stock Brokers, Australian Futures, Australian Companies, and Stock Exchanges.
Although, it contains many international links that may or may not be relevant
to a local investor (depending upon the individual). But they would most definitely
be of interest, such as Overseas Stock Exchanges.

An informative site, that gives up to date information on Australian and
overseas markets through daily market reports. Along with:
- Newsletters about the money market;
- An Overview and Superannuation;
- Research reports on many major companies and their recent stockmarket
performance;
- Share Investment information on jargon and brokers' rates.
6. "Horan Wall & Walker, Your Mortgage Magazine - FINANCE LINKS, (Online); (Tuesday 11 March 1997, Thursday 10 April 1997)", Available:

Well designed links page, covering many aspects of finance, including
the share market. Such linked topics include: Brokers’ online, on-line Glossaries
and Dictionaries, Equities, Interest Rates, Currencies and a Links Site and
Directories.
It has an extremely good ratings guide for all links and an explanation of
categories.

One of the best and extensive pages on the share market (if not the best
apart from no. 1). It is a daily up-dated site, covering such linked
topics as:
- Listed public companies;
- Stock brokers index (very extensive);
- On-line chart room;
- Financial Publications;
- Stock quotes;
- Market commentary;
- Newsgroups, etc.
Not only based on the share market and Australia, its links extend to all
financial/investment areas world wide.
8. "Wilson HTM Limited, Wilson HTM Limited, (Online);
(Monday 17 March 1997, Thursday 10 April 1997)", Available:

A good page from Wilson HTM Stock and Share Brokers. It contains:
- Daily up-dates of "Newsbytes" - a daily market commentary from one of
their staff;
- Economic updates;
- Full Company Reports;
- Investment Advice;
- Market Quotes;
- And links to foreign exchanges.
It is a great page for monitoring your own particular stocks or portfolio,
and the Australian Stockmarket as a whole.
9. "Stuart Cutler, Dicksons Limited - One of Australia's leading stockbrokers, (Online); (Thursday 10 April 1997, Thursday 10 April 1997)", Available:

A page from one of Australia's most prominent and leading brokers.
If it is advice on which shares to consider purchasing, then this is the page to
visit. It contains such topics as:
- Stock Profiles;
- Daily Statistics;
- Research on particular stocks;
- Dickson's top Stock list;
- And Links to listed companies.
Through this assignment, I was able to carry out an investigation using
the World Wide Web. This was done with the use of the various search engines
available. Although, it was learnt that unless some advance search techniques
were used, only a handful of sites returned would be relevant.
From the above collection of sites, it can be seen that there was a plentiful
amount of good resources available on the Share Market. Many web sites that
had good and relevant information were left out, due to word limitations.
Nevertheless, the above only represents a small proportion.
In terms of the task, the most challenging part was finding a few decent pages
on the topic, as a starting point. With a few of these, the rest were found through
the links section on each.
