Strathalbyn
Settled in 1839 by Scottish immigrants, this is one of South Australia's
prettiest towns, where history is a part of contemporary daily life. In
the north east corner of the Peninsula. Strathalbyn
has been designated a heritage town and has over thirty attractive,
heritage-listed buildings. Strathalbyn's two main shopping areas,
High Street, Albyn Terrace and Dawson Street are full of interesting shops
that feature antique, craft and gift shops. Other interesting sights are
the Court
House Museum, the Old school
and the Gasworks - which provided street lighting to this township from
1875. Visitors can dine
al fresco or at an hotel. Share a picnic withe ducks in the Soldiers
Memorial Gardens, beside the tranquil Angus River.

Incidentally, Strathalbyn has a roving, resident Town
Crier and the SteamRanger train connects from nearby Mount Barker on
Sundays. Strathalbyn provides an ideal base for visitors to explore the
Fleurieu, with its network of roads leading out to the surrounding districts
like spokes in a wheel. Don't miss the nearby wineries at Langhorne
Creek, the sailing on Lake Alexandrina or natural bushland walks in
surrounding bushlands, or along the coast. is
on the edge of the Adelaide Hills and the plains of the Peninsula.

The economic foundation of the town was similar
to much of Australia based on primary production, wheat , grapes, sheep
and mixed family farming. In recent years family farms have been collapsing
and the heart of farming has slowly been disintegrating. However the State
government and local entrepreneurs have given grape growing an economic
boost.

buy quality
antiques and bric a brac at fair prices. Then slow down even more to make
the most of the restful and beguiling Soldiers Memorial Gardens which follow
the River Angas though the town. Enjoy the geese swans and ducks, picnic
in the park.
Stone & Haywood Stationary Engine Museum
has more than 500 working models, the earliest dating from 1898, have been

Trust Museum Open by appointment for groups
or individuals. The collection occupies two historic buildings, the 1858
police station and the 1867 court house. Including is a walled courtyard,
three cells and a back yard full of farm exhibits.

Although a relatively small country town, Strathalbyn has
two commercial centres which are separated by
the meandering River Angas. High Street is
well known for its antique,
craft shops and cafes while Dawson Street
is the hub for general business.

Employment
and Education
Employment in the district has changed its focus from the older farming
traditions with the increase of secondary industry in the area and vineyards.
This was recently boosted by the establishment of a major South Australian
company Clipsal, and major grants for
wine
industry development.
The
Eastern Fleurieu School which was established in 1996,
is an amalgamation of the schools in the region, each maintaining its own
campus and provides education from reception to year twelve. Further education
and training is available through the Alexandrina Council, Fleurieu
Regional Development Corporation and TAFE.
Visitors
and Accommodation
Strathalbyn is in the middle of the triangle comprising the towns of
Adelaide, Murray Bridge on the mighty Murray River and the coastal holiday
resort of Victor
Harbor and so is the perfect spot for visitors to access many places

collection of original Aboriginal art-work is also on view, along with

The district is fortunate to have a high degree
of sustainable environmental consciousness, with land care groups, individuals.
Alexandrina Council has a policy of
'Greening Strathalbyn and District'
through tree planting and has an integrated programme of reduction and
recycling of waste, and there is an active 'Trees
for Life' group.

Sport
and Adventure.
During
the summer months, the Southern Encounter
runs
from Mt Barker to Victor Harbor stopping at Strathalbyn and Goolwa, and
is popular with passengers, observers, visitor and locals alike. The
Cockle Train runs short trips from Victor Harbor to Goolwa.

Rotary Club. Duck Racing on the
River Angas. Two thousand plastic ducks race and there are stalls and entertainment.

in Strathalbyn, and was one of our dedicated school bus drivers. You are
invited to meet Mac and learn about the ancient
art.
Milang,
Langhorne Creek and Clayton are
small townships a short drive from Strathalbyn, they are well worthvisiting.
