It's a wonder that the French aren't all 20-stone alcoholics, because cheap, great food and wine is so readily available. Many cafes were open by 6am, and had a few customers having their first glass of red for the day. The photo below was taken on a Sunday, and numerous churchgoers stopped in for a quick snort, including the two nuns behind us, in white.

Highly-developed interpersonal skills are obviously not a prerequisite for French waiters. However, the service was quick, if lacking a feeling of being welcomed. Breakfasts were generally okay, and lunches and dinners quite good. The French excel in the cake/pastry department, with raspberry tarts being our favourite.
