The Taj is beside the "Gateway of India", built to honour a visit of George V a while back. It is now home to touts and beggars. The piles of rubbish that littered the footpath on our early-morning walks were actually people dossed down for the night. (The beggars had a short day compared to folk in Indonesia - they usually hit the pavement at about 7pm, in daylight, and rose after 8am, to make way for street stalls.)

After the conference, Helen and I shifted to a cheaper hotel for two days. We shopped in the local area, but ranged further afield in taxis.
