The Story Against The Day of Wrath (working title) is about the impulsiveness, irrationality and determination of one man and how his actions affect the lives of the people around him with tragic consequences. On a busy Friday night, in a late bar near Dublin's quayside district, bar owner Conor Flynn receives a distraught phone call from a girl who has just been raped. The call throws Conor into emotional turmoil, and in the ensuing events and confusion, his life and the lives of the people he cares about most deeply, are changed forever. Caught up in the violence that follows that ill-fated phone call, head of club security, Declan, Conor's best friend John and doorman Adam head off on a journey of destruction as they at first stalk the rapist, before hunting him down like a wild animal. But not everything is at it seems. Who was the girl on the phone? What happened to Conor's sister Lisa? And what is it that Declan is hiding from the others? Only in the eleven hours that follow will the truth eventually come out. The Look This is bleak, sensitive and very tragic story with a dark and violent climax. Therefore, it is very important that this will be a character led piece, yet still highly visual to give it both a mainstream and an art house appeal. Having said that, there is no intention whatsoever to fill the screen with gratuitous or excessive violence and as this is only a twenty five minute film, the pace of the story changes rapidly from long drawn out silences in Ruby's kitchen to the relentlessness of the penultimate scene on the dockside. The Production To be made for a half hour TV slot and the film festival circuit. It is the intention to shoot this film short in a Super35 or Super16 format. The story is set in Dublin and ideally we hope to shoot the film on location here. However, London is also being considered as alternative location. We intend to shoot the film in 8-9 days straight (including weekends.) Budget permitting, all staff, crew & cast will be paid Scale, though until this can be confirmed we are working on this being an unpaid shoot. The Cast Conor: Good looking and stylishly dressed, Conor is a confident, almost arrogant self-made man in his late twenties. The manager of a late bar, he is used to having his own way and is very much in control of his own life. His father walked out when he was a small child, so he grew up being the only man in the home. He has a younger sister who was born after his father's departure. Their mother died suddenly when he was seventeen and he had to work hard to achieve the success he has made of his life. However, he is quite insular and has few close friends. His nineteen year old sister Lisa being the most important person in his life. Declan: A thick set and extremely muscular man around thirty years of age, Declan has an air of mystery about him. Quiet and apparently at ease with himself, Declan seems to fear nothing, yet gives little of himself away. However, although he has little to say, he is not adverse to speaking his mind if pushed too far. Nothing is really known about Declan's past and nobody is about to start asking questions. However, his past comes back to haunt him as the climax of the story approaches. John: Sensitive and shy, John is about twenty eight, tall, slim and well dressed. John and Conor went to school together and have known each other for many years. John lacks some confidence, making him more vulnerable and nervous in character, especially around Declan, of whom he fears. John is virtually the antithesis of conor in personality. Adam: Tall and menacing, Adam is a wild card. He's in his late twenties and has the air of hooliganism about him. A bodybuilder, he towers over most men and has been working the door at Conor's bar for the past few months. He is not adverse to taking drugs or breaking the rules either, along with the face of anyone who gets in his way. He is his own boss and doesn't like to take orders from anyone, though grudgingly he has a certain respect for Declan, his immediate boss and physical superior too. Naturally aggressive, he is basically up for any mischief as long as there is the chance of a good fight involved. Lisa: A nineteen year old student, Conor's younger sister lives with their grandmother Ruby. Attractive, yet innocent in appearance, Lisa depends on Conor in many ways, both for financial support and as a father figure, yet she has the will and inner strength to put him in his place when the mood takes her, because she too is a mother figure to him and loves him dearly. Ruby: Lisa and Conor's grandmother. Ruby is in her late sixties and has Altsheimer's disease. She cares deeply about her grandchildren, yet is more like a child herself and needs their care and love constantly. Ray Harris: The hunted man, in his mid to late forties, is tall and slim yet slightly dishevelled in appearance. Harris is beginning to show the signs of his age as his life begins to pass him by. Like Declan he also has a past, which comes to light at the climax of the story. Susie: Declan's girlfriend. In her early to mid twenties, a slim, celtic beauty with long raven hair. She is the only one who knows Declan's dark secret. [NB: This is not a speaking part but requires an actress who has strong emotional abilities]. Other Roles Martin O'Neill: Rapist (opening sequence). Tall, slim male, late thirties to early forties, dark hair. Young boy and girl: Victims. Characters both blonde/fair haired. NB: Resume's will only be accepted from bona fide actors agencies. Young Ray Harris: Character in early twenties. A young father and husband. Young Conor Flynn: Child of approximately five years old. NB: Resume's will only be accepted from bona fide actors agencies. Young Conor's mother: Character in early twenties. A young mother and wife. Extras will be required for scene in busy bar/nightclub. |
