What is the Adult Basic Education Program?

The Dickson County Adult Basic Education Program is designed to help citizens of the county to improve their reading and math skills and/or earn their G.E.D. diploma.

Who can attend Adult Basic Education classes?

Any Dickson County resident 18 years of age or older who needs to improve his/her skills in reading, writing, math, science, or social studies.

Where are the classes held?

Classes are held at the Old Burns School, 112 College Street in Burns, Tennessee. Click here for a schedule of classes.

How much does attendance in the program cost?

Enrollment in the ABE classes is free. However, when a student is ready to take the G.E.D. test, the cost is $45.

Who teaches the classes?

State certified teachers instruct the classes.

How long will it take me to get my G.E.D.?

The length of time it will take you to get your G.E.D. will depend on how much of your education you have before you start adult education classes and the amount of time you have to study and prepare for the G.E.D. test.

How do I enroll, and what happens then?

    1. Start attending classes (Click here for a schedule of classes).
    2. Take a test to see how you are improving.
    3. After you have made progress in your studies, take the practice G.E.D. test.
    4. Take the G.E.D. test.
    5. (Optional, but encouraged) Take part in the graduation ceremonies in June.

Where do I take the G.E.D. test?

The local testing center is the Tennessee Technology Center (vocational school) on Highway 46 in Dickson
