| When I was thirteen years old, I was sitting in a dark movie theater in my little hometown in Arkansas watching Susan Hayward and John Gavin in "Back Street." Young people very often latch onto role models, and I was no exception. Susan Hayward was mine! I don't think it was for her extraordinary beauty, and I don't think it was for her acting ability. Actually, "Back Street" was not one of her shining moments as an actress. It was something else. I think I saw strength of character, love, humanity, sensitivity, graciousness, determination, and tenderness as a woman. As many, many years have gone by, I've outgrown that idolization, but not my tremendous admiration and respect for Susan Hayward's life and career. She was different! She didn't play the little Hollywood games. She struggled, worked, and fought so hard..How could one not help but admire her! She wasn't a saint, but then again, who is?" She was, however, very honest, real, and gutsy. She suffered, as we all do, from various types of insecurities; however, she didn't let them stand in the way of obtaining her dreams. Throughout her life she had an abundance of personal problems...yet she carried on. She loved her children dearly and fought to care for them and protect them. and in the end, she was still a fighter, inspiring all those who were aware of her struggle with her terminal illness...and inspiring all of us who have read her story. We have found courage in it..........If you are of the baby boomer generation or older, I think you will enjoy my homepage. If you are younger and have never heard of Susan Hayward or are not familiar with her life or career, I hope you will come away from here with an interest in knowing more about her and seeing her films--many of which are quite remarkable--"I Want to Live," "I'll Cry Tomorrow," "Smash-Up, The Story of a Woman," " With a Song in My Heart," "My Foolish Heart," and many others....I hope you enjoy the site! |
