Bordering on insanity?
This pattern is written in Australian terminology (USA version coming ... eventually)
You will need - 2 colours (A and B) of 8 ply yarn, size 4 hook (size 6 works ok too - but the square is bigger and looser, of course) ... and you will need 4 safety pins or little bits or yarn or whatever you usually use as markers. (if you are making more than one of these, markers may not be needed after you have done this the first time and know how it works ;-)
Using A, 4ch, slst to form a ring.
Round 1. 1ch. dc into ring, 1ch (counts as 1st tr), 15tr into ring, join with a slst to top of beginning dc 1ch. (16tr)
Round 2. 1ch. Working in back loops only - dc in each tr join with a slst to first dc. (16dc).
Round 3. 1ch. Working in back loops only - (dc, 1ch) in same st as joining, 1htr in same stitch. Work 2htr in each of next 15dc, join with a slst to top of beg dc, 1ch.
Round 4. 1ch. Working in spaces between each 2htr - (dc, 1ch) in same space as joining. 2 tr in same space. * (3dtr, 2ch, 3dtr) in next space. 3tr in next space. skip, and place a marker in, next space, 1ch. 3tr in next space. * Rpt from * to * 2 more times. (3dtr, 2ch, 3dtr) in next space. 3tr in next space. skip next space. 1ch. Join with slst to beginning (dc, 1ch).
Round 5. 1ch. Working in back loops only - dc in same stitch as joining. dc in each of next 2 tr. * dc in each of next 3 dtr. 2dc in (not around) next ch. 1ch. 2dc in next 1ch. dc in each of next 3 dtr. dc in each of next 3 tr. dc in next 1ch. dc in next 3tr. * Rpt from * to * 2 more times. dc in each of next 3dtr. 2dc in next ch. 1ch, 2dc in next ch. dc in each of next 3 dtr. dc in each of next 3 tr. dc in next 1ch. Join with a slst to top of beg dc. Finish off A.
Round 6. Using B, and working in back loops only - join with a dc in any corner 1ch. * dc in each of next 8 dc. Skip next dc and work 1 dtr behind the missed dc and into the marked space in round 4 below (and remove marker). dc in each of next 8 dc. 3dc in corner 1ch. * Rpt from * to * 2 more times. dc in next 8 dc. Skip next dc and work 1dtr behind the missed dc and into the marked space on round 4 below. dc in each of next 8 dc. 2dc in corner 1ch. Join with a slst into beginning dc.
Round 7. 1ch. Working in back loops only - (dc, 1ch) in same stitch as joining. 1tr in each of next 5 dc. * (Skip 1 dc. 1ch, 1tr in next stitch) 4 times. 1tr in each of next 5 dc. (2tr, 2ch, 2tr) in next dc. (the middle dc of the corner). 1 tr in each of next 6dc. * Rpt from * to * 2 more times. (skip 1 dc. 1ch, 1tr in next stitch) 4 times. 1tr in each of next 5 dc. (2tr. 2ch, 2tr) in next dc. Join with a slst to top of beginning (dc, 1ch.)
Round 8. 1ch. Working in back loops only - dc in each st around, except for the 2ch in each corner - in these, work (2dc in first chain, 1ch, 2dc in next ch). Join with a slst to beginning dc. Finish off B.
