"The Hunter and the Holocaust!" Captain Marvel 20 (June 1970)
"Here Comes the Hulk!" Captain Marvel 21 (September 1970)
(1970/06/01)
Reader Rating: Excellent; Thunderbolts Interest: Medium
Summary: Rick Jones thinks that Bruce Banner might be able to free Mar-Vell from the Negative Zone. While searching for Banner, Captain Marvel battles an early generation of the Rat Pack, looting in the wake of a tornado.
Rick tracks Banner down to a hidden lab in the southwest, and Bruce agrees to try to help. But when a friend of his is endangered by protesting students, Banner transforms to the Hulk and it is up to Mar-Vell to stop him.
Continuity: Banner quotes Thomas Randolph: "Justice, like lightning, ever should appear/To few men ruin but to all men fear." Mar-Vell uses a variation as a battle cry.
Comments: There are some logical loopholes in Roy Thomas' plot, but his script is thoughtful and literate without being overwrought. The Gil Kane/Dan Adkins art is elegant and electric. For a few brief months under this creative team, "The Sensational New Captain Marvel" is truly sensational.
