Summary: The Guardians of the Galaxy journey from the future to 1978 to stop their arch-enemy Korvac from altering the timeline. No sooner do The Avengers agree to help them, then the heroes begin vanishing into thin air, into the other-dimensional stronghold of The Collector. And lurking in the background is the strange menace of Michael, The Enemy, who plans to alter reality. The Avengers are (deep breath): The Black Panther, The Black Widow, Captain America, Captain Mar-Vell, Hawkeye, Hercules, Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, Quicksilver, The Scarlet Witch, Thor, The Vision, Yellowjacket, The Wasp, and Wonder Man.

Continuity: Hawkeye returns to The Avengers again and meets Peter Gyrich. The Two-Gun Kid returns to his own time. There is a secondary storyline (good, but irrelevant) that can be skipped by stopping on page 15 of "...Though Hell Should Bar the Way!" and skipping issue #171.

Comments: Jim Shooter achieves a minor miracle. Against all odds, he brings to light his vision of an ambiguous villain and forces set in motion that are too powerful to be stopped. Despite substitute writers and rotating artists, the major storyline is built with subtlety and care. Hawkeye returns in "Holocaust in New York Harbor", but he really gets to shine in "Captives of the Collector!" All this plus the annoying Peter Gyrich, who will continue to torment Hawkeye in the Thunderbolts days.
