About Abortion

Why do people who oppose abortion try to force this view on others? Our religious beliefs are private!

Abortion is a woman's right, plain and simple. So it's not my place or anyone else's to question her decision, right?

Consider various homicide laws in America. Upn what basis did we arrive at such laws? Our founders were operating within a Judeo-Christian framework. Do the words "Thou Shalt Not Kill" sound familiar? Hmm, sounds religious.... Of course they do. They are from the Ten Commandments given to the Hebrew people by God. Many of America's laws are based upon those same Ten Commandments, therefore our religious roots are inescapable. Believe it or not, there are societies around the world that do not have laws like this. Consider some Muslim countries where a woman can be killed by her family if she shames or dishonors them. America's religious heritage cannot be denied, not can the ethics of Judeo-Christianity be relegated to the private sphere. If that were true, then my neighbor could rob me, cheat me or steal from me and claim that he is merely following his personal beliefs. Would I be imposing my views on him if I said "You can NOT steal from me or cheat me! It's wrong!" Yes, I suppose so. But laws are what protect us from each other and from ourselves! Spirituality is part of the human experience. To separate it from the political and social world would be to deny our very natures.

First of all, why do many Americans believe that abortion is a right? Precisely because the Supreme Court in 1973 claimed to have found it in the Constitution. Have you ever checked the Constitution to see if there is a right to abortion? We have a right to free speech and a right to bear arms but nowhere were American women given the right to end the life of the embryo or fetus. Secondly, notice that I said "life." That's because science affirms that human life begins at conception. If it doesn't begin there, then where? Let's face it. It's either alive or it's not. There is no in between. When a woman conceives and becomes pregnant, she is not pregnant with a mass of tissue. As early as the 18th day a baby's heart begins to beat! Therefore, most abortions stop the beating heart of a living human being, albeit in its very early stages of life. So to answer your question, no one has a right to purposely end the life of another human being in the womb. This is why many Americans are questioning the decision that millions of women make each year.

I think it's fine that you are pro-life but you should respect my pro-choice views. America should represent all of the people.

We should all be represented. So if the unborn are not, then we demand that they be included as well. Politicians should be especially careful about ignoring an entire segment of the American population.

Abortion is a very personal thing. Why doesn't the government stay out of it?.

How quickly we forget that it was the government which first legalized it! (Roe v. Wade 1973).

That's right. It's a law. So why are you trying to undo it?

Why did we undo slavery and segregation? Because they were also wrong..

Abortion is none of my business. I don't like it but I'm not going to trying to stop others.

I think we should not have so much abortion. Only women who are sexually assaulted should be allowed to have them. What is your view?

So you admit you don't like it. What good is your belief if you don't act upon it? What good is it to say "I don't like what's going on" and then do nothing to stop it from continuing? If you will not stand up for the smallest of human persons, how will you stand up for the rest of us? Be consistent! Be strong in your convicions! If you value life, then you must try to educate those who do not!

So a woman who is sexually assaulted is not pregnant with a baby like other women? If we are going to say that life is there, then we have to defend every life, no matter what the circumstances. Post-abortion syndrome can actually worsen the pain of sexual trauma. Not only is the woman hurting from the crime, but she now must deal with the death of her child. We should have the greatest of compassion for these women and help them take the first step towards forgiveness and healing: welcoming their innocent child into the world. This might mean keeping the baby or it could mean giving the child up for adoption in a loving home. This is the mother's choice.
