Bob by Raewyne Pekin (NZKC Supplement)

GFtCH Midisland Sinbhad owned by Kevin Carter, whelped 21.11.86

Kevin and Bob became instant companions, both enjoying hunting and trialing, but especially deer stalking and duck shooting. Their first duck shooting escapade came when Bob was five months old.

Bob then began trialing, gaining all his challenge points in Retriever events only. His first Championship placing was at 15 months, a 2nd Aggregate at the Pahiatua Championship trial in 1988. His first challenge point was achieved on the 11th of September, 1988 at he Pointer and Setter Club Championship trial at Lake Rerewhakaaitu at the age of ten months old. He became a FtCh on the 21st of October 1990 when the South Auckland Gundog Club hosted the New Zealand Retriever Championships. He was only three years and 10 months old.

Bob became a Grand Field Trial Champion on the 26th of January, 1992 at the Auckland and Regions German Shorthaired Pointer Club Championship trial when he was 5 years and 2 months old. He at present also holds the Waikato Retriever Championships Cup, which he has won 4 times consecutively. Bob at 6 years old (the time of this writing) holds 24 Challenge points, and is still a keen trialing dog and deer stalker.

CH & GFT CH Pukemere Mura Kuri

By Gill Wise (NZKC Supplement)

Chip, as he was known to all his mates, followed in his fathers pawsteps-becoming New Zealand's second dual Champion. His first win was in the Wairoa Allbreeds in February 1987 and he got his Grand Field Trial Champion title in October 1989. He impressively equaled first place in the South Island Retriever Championship, Easter 1988, placed third equal in the New Zealand National Championships Allbreeds and then won the North Island Allbreed Championship Easter 1989. In a little over 2 years time, he won 11 Retriever Championships, cementing his place amongst the cream of New Zealand Field trial dogs.

The epitome of a retriever, Chip marked exceptionally well, ran straight and true to and from the game, hat top ability and consistency. Chip once on a practice day proved his ability to run straight. The thrown bird had landed behind a fallen tree which was lying directly in the straight course from handler and the dog to the bird. The tree had a hole in it, exactly where the dog running true, had to negotiate it. Chip not only ran out straight through the hole, but even more amazingly he also returned via the same hole. Another quality which had helped Chip was his ability not to be distracted from the job at hand. On more than one occasion, he had performed stud duties and then gone on to win a trial the same day.

Chip was also an excellent rough-shooting dog. Ron told us that one night he retrieved sixty-five ducks, but Ron didn't lay claim to shooting all of them.

Chip, a medium size Curly, completed his show career before Ron began trialing him. In the ring he distinguished himself with a Reserve of Group at Routorua, as well as completing his title.

Chips contribution to the Curly breed is undoubtedly of immense significance. Proof that New Zealand is producing top quality Curlies.
