Online Christian Hymns in Esperanto

first lines
The Esperanto Online Hymnal
This is a list of (mostly well-known) hymns that are available online, each with an appropriate MIDI to illustrate the melody, in the new Esperanto web hymnal, TTT-Himnaro Cigneta. The list is selective, not exhaustive. If you don't see what you're looking for, email me and I'll try to find (or translate) it for you. May take a while, heck, it may never happen, but I'll try ;-)... Or if you'd like to just paddle around in the hymnal and see whither the surf beareth you — bearing in mind that most of the "Lifeguard on Duty" signs are in Esperanto — feel free to visit the List of Contents.

I've tried to give the most common English titles or first lines; note that not all the translations were made from English texts; where the original title is well known I have occasionally given it, italicized, in parentheses.

Where more than one version is available, I have generally linked to the version I personally prefer, and noted the existence of others. (See All hail the power of Jesus’ name and Praise to the Lord, the Almighty (Lobe den Herren), below, for extreme examples of multiple versions.)

Where a hymn is listed in square brackets [see, e.g., "Morning has broken"], this means that the Esperanto hymn is not a translation of the English, but is similar enough that it can be used as if it were.

For the most part I have not listed Christmas carols or Advent hymns; those can be found through a separate list of Online Christmas Carols in Esperanto.

For more information on Esperanto, visit the Multilingual Information Centre at Esperanto.Net (and click on the British and US flags to access information in English). On Esperanto hymnody per se there is little in English to recommend; my translation of the Foreword to Adoru kantante (the 1971 hymnal of the International League of Christian Esperantists) is available, however, for the perusal of the hymnologically inclined.

There are a number English hymns in the hymnal: some that I wrote or translated (e.g. Who'd have thought the Lord Almighty, on Jesus' ancestrices), some that I like that were missing from the main online English hymnals (e.g. the MCC ballad Our God is like an eagle), and some that just struck me as too bad to allow to pass unrecorded (e.g. the dying insects' moans in Hail, ye sighing sons of sorrow.

The background music is Armageddon,
my preferred tune for Who is on the Lord's side?
