Meeting May 30 2000

Dear Dedicated Dads...

And you gentlemen are.  We had a good meeting.  Matt seemed pleased to note that once one opens the "Friends Forever" book the whole thing is revealed.

This Indian Guide thing is not a mystery.  I want to review some points.

Talking stick:    Use time to tell of interactions with son.  Praise growth or good behavior.      Little braves turn should be guided to talking about something done with dad. So that they    learn to focus on good remembrances of you together. Craft time:    Most crafts are best if they take some partnership between father and son.     Building the Pals feelings of cooperation and accomplishment. Games:    To build team work and tribal togetherness as well as good sportsmanship.  And Fun! Indian Names:    Each little brave learns to expect that the Big Braves of the tribe are on first name basis.      I.E. not just "Eddies Dad"  he is also known to me as Big Eagle and can be called that. Frog Skin (dollar):    Encourage responsibility to group.  Begins with responsibility at home to earn the frog skin     that he contributes.  Dads work to contribute to home and tribe.  Use opportunity to show    little braves that you are productive at work (it's not just someplace you go in the day).    Say "I earned this Frog Skin fixing a car" (Jeff) and give your boy a dollar in advance and let him know you think he earned it since he kept his room clean when asked etc

That is most of what a typical meeting shoots for.

We did that tonight.  My boy and I did a nice cooperative effort on making a pattern for the craft.  I was very VERY happy to see Little Eagle try in the game even if there was a winner and looser team.   He even was trying to do the spoon race after the competition was over.  Also I noted that Swift Rabbit was able to TALK when it was his turn.  Very good improvement.

Since we met in the park we had some extra atmosphere.  The fire and Smoors made the kids very happy and the event really special.  We could not have done that in a home.  Way to messssy.   Congrats. to Matt Gold for a very good meeting.

His cost...  Some macaroni; hot dogs; sausages; Sour Kraut; adult soda; juice boxes; some charcoal; ice; chips; plates. Feed for 6 men and 6 boys.

Our Gain... Skills that build better men out of the boys we now guide.  Treasured time with our boys that they can look back on with special feelings of accomplishment and Joy and with warm Feelings for Dad.  Just what price does one put on special remembrances from those early years.
