This is the Temple of Poseidon, sitting atop Cape Sounion, looking over the Aegean Sea. As legend has it, King Aegeus' son, Theseus, went on a journey to slay the Minotaur of Crete. He brought with him two flags for the ships mast - a black flag for defeat, and a white flag for victory, so that on his return the people could see from a distance if he had succeeded by which flag was raised. Each day the king looked out over the Aegean Sea from the temple, awaiting his son's return. Theseus was victorious, and set back to return home. In all the excitement, however, he had forgotten to change flags to pronounce his victory. As the ship grew near, the king, seeing the black flag still amast, believed his son dead, and threw himself off the cliff onto the rocks below. |
