So you would have
to have been living under a rock to not hear about all
of the stuff going on with marriages. All over the nation,
the issue of allowing homosexuals to marry has been simmering
and it seems like it is beginning to boil over. One state
allows it, another state doesn't. One state half asses
it, while another state makes it illegal. Just when you
thought America has gotten past its prepubescent stages
and finally matured, we see that it has a lot of growing
to do.
We have seen it
in the past. America, as much as it preaches freedom and
equality, is slow to give its citizens the rights that
they are entitled to. Take every single group that isn't
a white male as an example of this and you will see what
I mean. Black people, over time, were treated more like
4th class citizens than 2nd. First came the fight for
freedom that America said was permitted by the Bible (gotta
love that book). Then came the fight for the vote. We
were good enough to pay taxes and fight in wars, but may
the Lord strike us down if we tried to vote. Then came
the desegregation process where we were still looked to
as a lower species. What about how the nation views Arab
Americans? For once, there is race lower than African
American. How much crap did they have to put up with since
that infamous day close to 3 years ago? How long did women
have to fight in order to stop being viewed as a weaker
sex no matter what color they are?
Not to say that
any one struggle has been more difficult than another,
but we cannot continue this. Has there ever been a time
when there was not a group being oppressed? When are we
going to grow up from this, "You are different so
I don't want to play with you" mentality that we
were supposed to leave behind in the 4th grade? I mean,
think about it. This is what America, as a people, are
doing to gay people right now. Why is it that there are
crimes of hate? Because someone is different. Not what
the nation calls the norm, yet we strive for diversity.
We are still at a point where if someone is different,
then they are bad until we get used to them. Kind of like
Black people. We had to fight our way just to be accepted.
America had no choice but to accept us because we weren't
going anywhere.
This is the same
deal with gay people. Homosexuality is not a virus or
disease that is spreading throughout our country even
though George Dubaya and some Christians all around the
world want to make people believe it is. Also, being gay
is not something that comes by choice. I mean, seriously,
who the hell would want to put up with such crap from
this much of the nation? Some people say they were born
like that while others say that it is something that popped
into their head when they were young. Either way it is
not something that will ever leave. Homosexuality is just
another form of attraction, just like being Hispanic is
another race.
It's funny how
Dubaya and the Catholic church have spoken out against
the union of gay couples. They say that they want to retain
the sanctity of marriage. They want to keep it pure and
sacred. I'm sorry, but what the fuck does that mean? I
think both idiotic parties are way too late to preserve
that. Where was Dubaya when shows like Who Wants to
Marry a Millionaire or Joe Millionaire were
produced? Here you have people who come onto a game show
and try to win a guy just for money. They even tied the
knot and split soon after. Where was Dubaya then? Even
better, where was the Pope and Company when Britney Spears
was allowed to get married and then split after a single
day of not being the dreams of every teenage boy out there?
Where was he when Dennis Rodman and Carmen Electra did
the very same thing, only they were intoxicated? Don't
want celebrities? How about over half of the nation can't
seem to stay together because of whatever problems they
might have? Where are the Super Spousal Squad now?
It kills be because
people are holding on to their Bibles a little too hard.
Granted, the good Book has given us some of the greatest
lessons to have ever been uttered by human lips (not to
mention heavenly ones), but there is some awful stuff
in there too. I mean, the Bible "condoned" slavery
and have made women the second string that they are today.
In fact, the Bible doesn't even say that homosexuality
is wrong. It just says that man cannot sleep with another
man as he does with woman. Basically sodomy is a sin.
If you sodomize with a man, you are sinning. If you do
the same with a woman, you are still sinning.
So a straight
man can sin just as much as a gay one. Everyone sees this
passage as saying that homosexuals are going to hell when
in essence it is just the act of sodomy, if you want to
go by the book. Another thing that pisses me off is the
fact that people think that being gay is the ultimate
sin. Forget that I had sex before I was married and
now I have a little bastard child, at least I'm not gay.
A sin is a sin is a sin. I personally don't believe it
is one, but even if it were, would a gay woman be in any
less shape than a straight one?
Now, should gays
be allowed to marry? Why not? My problem is, if the Church
doesn't want to do it, that is fine. But there is a separation
between Church and State and the State should give the
same rights to everyone. Does the State deny an atheist
couple? No, yet they do not allow a homosexual couple
to be married. I just don't understand. Love is love no
matter how you want to put it. Americans piss me off because
they act as if gay love is any different from heterosexual
love. Ask any person who has been in love with both sexes
and they will tell you that even though the attraction
is different, the love that they feel are the same. So
why not reward that? Marriage is a promise that two people
are no longer two, but one. Why is it that we allow Britney
and Rodman to play with that like it is a toy, yet the
ones who really need it cannot take it in hand?
In my mind, marriage
is nothing but a legal document. After the waves of "Marry
this guy for money" shows, I look at marriage and
laugh. If I were not allowed to be marriage, I wouldn't
care. I want my bond to hold us together, not a contract.
A couple can survive alone without something like that.
This issue won't
go away anytime soon. Just like the African American race
could not be held down, just like the female population
could not be held down, the gay community will rise up
soon and they will win. Human Spirit
