Kyle's Bio

A native of Paynesville, Minnesota, Kyle Nelson won numerous Minnesota State High School League awards in oboe, flute, voice, and piano. His piano teachers were Mary Heitzman and Robert Palmer. His oboe teachers were David Ernest and Rhadames Angelucci. After graduating from high school and earning awards for being the most accomplished instrumentalist and vocalist in his graduating class, Kyle attended the Oberlin Conservatory of Music.

At Oberlin Conservatory, he studied oboe with James Caldwell and voice with Howard Hatton and was an active accompanist for the Oboe, Flute, Voice, and French Horn departments.

In 1983, Kyle moved to the Twin Cities. He worked as a woodwind player for various recording studios, studied oboe with his former high school oboe teacher, Rhadames Angelucci, and taught oboe, flute, clarinet, piano, voice, recorder, and organ for various local music stores. From 1985-86, he was the Assistant Band and Choir Director at De LaSalle High School.

In 1986, Kyle was offered an accompanist position at the Minnesota Dance Theatre & School, being promoted to Senior Accompanist and Accompanist Supervisor in 1987 when the school changed its name to NorthWest Ballet School and merged with Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle. Since then, Kyle has worked for several dance schools including Zenon Dance Company & School, Minneapolis Children's Theatre Company & School, Macalester College dance department, Perpich Center For Arts Education dance program, the University of Minnesota dance program, and Ballet Arts Minnesota where he was the Senior Accompanist and Accompanist Coordinator for several years.  During his employment at Ballet Arts Minnesota, Kyle returned to studying piano, doing so with Donald Betts at Macalester College. In 2000, Kyle was Guest Company Pianist for the Milwaukee Ballet. He has been company class pianist for American Ballet Theatre, James Sewell Ballet, Meryl Tankard Dance Theatre (Australia), Minnesota Dance Theatre, New Amsterdam Ballet, Royal Winnipeg Ballet, Twyla Tharp Dance Company and a national touring production of "The Car Man". He has been a ballet master class pianist for Jacques Cesbron, Lynn Cote, Paul Estabrook, Allen Fields, Robert Gardner, Jens Graff, Luba Gulyaeva, Deborah Hadley, Martine van Hamel, Christian Holder, Dariusz Hochman, Anna-Marie Holmes, Gabriella Komleva, Dennis Marshall, Bonnie Mathis, Max Ratevossian, Suki Schorer, Marjorie Thompson, Ronn Tice, William Whitner and various members of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School. In 2004, Kyle was invited by the Royal Winnipeg Ballet School to teach a workshop to the accompanists and teachers on how to select the appropriate music for a ballet class. He has been a modern dance master class accompanist for Carl Flink, Siri Kommedahl, Bebe Miller, Emily Plouchet, Toni Pierce, Erin Thompson, and Doug Varone. Kyle has also been the piano accompanist for the Minneapolis Community College Choir, Paul Kaye Singers, Plymouth Creek Christian Church, and the Lundstrum Center For The Performing Arts.

As a professional pianist for musical theater, Kyle has been playing for shows since 1982. His show credits include

In the 1980s and 90s, Kyle continued his voice training, studying with Clifton Ware at the University of Minnesota and on partial scholarship with Donald Hoiness, Professor Emeritus of St. Olaf College School of Music. As a voice teacher, Kyle's students have won local and national competitions, have received contracts with major record labels, have appeared in local television commercials, and have had leads in community and professional theater productions.  He was the performance and vocal workshop coach for the Plaza 3 Modeling and Talent Agency Talent Division representatives to the 1987 International Talent & Modeling Association Convention in N.Y.C. and helped the agency bring home the first place trophy in the Talent Division Competition. 1987 was the only year they won that prize. He has also taught musical theater workshops at high schools and colleges in the Twin Cities area.

Kyle is currently the Pianist and Associate Musical Director for the highly acclaimed Plymouth Playhouse production of "Church Basement Ladies 2-A Second Helping" and is an accompanist for Minnesota Dance Theatre & School. He also has a small private voice studio.
