                 FLIGHT IN THE NIGHT

**
A third place winner in the 2003 IFS writing contest at
Northern Kentucky University**

Wispy ghost figures float upwards from swamp
           Soggy            damp             Spongy
                    Beneath my feet

Teeth chatter like the noisy clatter of a boxcar
Hunger snaps at my insides like a
          Famished animal

Cold pox rise on my skin
                    As
Chilling breeze savagely pierces thin dress

Heart reverberates in my chest like the tribal
          Drum of my forefathers
                     To be

Free                Free              Free

Shadows reach manacles towards me
         Menacing.
Lantern glows ahead: friend or foe?

The whining bay of hounds track my crimson footprints,
          Blood freezes in veins
Are they near...or far?

My body is to die
Every step agony
But I have known torture worse than this

           So

Spirit conquers body
          Fire burns deep
                To be

Free                Free               Free
