Office King and Queen Source: MALAYA.COM Author: Ethel Ramos Date: April 13, 2002 REGINE Velasquez seemed in her element when she was being crowned, literally, Box Office Queen during simple rites held at the UP Theater in Diliman, Quezon City last Thursday, April 10. Crowned Box Office King was Aga Muhlach. Both were honored with the said titles on the strength of the box office success of the only movie they did last year, "Pangako, Ikaw Lang," produced by Viva Films. The occasion was the 2001-2002 Guillermo Mendoza Memorial Scholarship Foundation, Inc.'s Gabi Ng Parangal for the Box Office King and Queen of RP Movies; Mr. & Miss RP Movies (which were won by Ricky Davao and Assunta de Rossi) and Popular Prince and Princess of RP Movies (Carlo Aquino and Alexandra de Rossi). In her speech, Regine said she was pretty glad that Aga won the award not only because he deserves it but because he is one of the kindest persons in showbiz. He revealed that when she was not yet the popular Regine that she is now, quite a number of actors didn't want to be paired with her. Except Aga. Regine and Aga's first film together was "Dahil May Isang Ikaw," which also marked their first time to have Joyce Bernal for a director. "Sa pelikula pa lang na iyon," Regine revealed, "swak na kami. In 'Pangako, Ikaw Lang,' we were like family." Aga, for his part, said Regine has a way of getting the best out of him as an actor. "Kaya nga, she is one of my favorite leading ladies. And I don't mind working with her over and over again." * * * Regine will headline a benefit concert, titled "One Night with Regine Velasquez," which ABS-CBN will present at the scenic steps of the National Museum on Friday, April 26. The concert, according to Regine, excites her since it will be her first time to team up with the 85-piece San Miguel Philharmonic Orchestra and the 55-piece San Miguel Chorale. A unique open-air concert, "One Night..." will feature a whole new repertoire specially selected for Regine. Her musical director is Ryan Cayabyab. Over-all director is Johnny Manahan. It was Regine who suggested that ABS-CBN come up with a live concert to be presented as a special on Channel 2. "They wanted me kasi to do a variety special," she said. "One Night..." is for the benefit of the 163's Children Village, which is now building a home for some 200 children from the Bantay Bata program. Bantay Bata rescues and takes care of abused and neglected children. Regine has a special passion for worthy causes. She has done benefit concerts for the Singapore's National Kidney Foundation, the Hongkong AIDS Foundation, the Hongkong Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philippines Bridges School for Special Children |
