August 24, 2004 - I was never really drawn to lighthouses until I started getting a lot of lighthouse postcards in my collection, and through the years, I have concentrated on lighthouses and maps and my collection has grown even if I had set is aside due to the demands of life from time to time.
Right now I am not actively trading but I continue to receive postcards and inquiries for a trade, but previous lapses on my part in trading have kept me from actively exchanging cards again. I do try to return the favor from those who continue to send me postcards. And yes, the eternal collector that I am, I grab the freecards when I get the chance to (saw some new releases of Absolut two weeks ago in Manhattan!) and I try to get a postcard or two when we go out of New York. In New York itself, there seems to be no new offerings, so I haven't bought any.
August 19 is a special date to me because it was when I got married. Alan has always thought of ways to celebrate it in a simple yet special way, and with Angel now in our midst, we decided we'd do our dinner date a day early and bring the family to Montauk where my favorite lighthouse sits.
So we hied off to the Hamptons with my mom and Angel and Mikey (my stepson) in tow. After lunch at Gossman's Dock, we went to the lighthouse so Mikey could climb up and explore it. I decided to forego that because Angel was sleeping in the car, but I made sure I got my share of lighthouse pictures before we drove away.
I don't know if it's the concept of being such a beacon of light for seafaring travellers, or if it's simply because they can be so elegant and sleek even when in disrepair. Montauk is currently in bad need of a fresh coat of paint yet it stands there majestically.
This place will always be a source of comfort because it was during a time of loneliness that I first climbed its stairs and held the breathtaking view from the top. I had just suffered a second miscarraige and lost my job -- and knowing how I had always wanted to see Montauk Lighthouse up close, Alan had brought me to the Hamptons for a quite weekend just to help me cope. And cope, I did.. So coming back with my little one and my family is like a sweet reunion for me and my favorite lighthouse. And I intend to come back and come back in the years to come.
As of yet, I have no access to a scanner but one of my other goals is to actually put my lighthouse postcards on the web. For now, I am compiling a directory of my lighthouse postcards for reference.
Please send me a message if you're interested to trade viewcards from New York. If I owe you any trades, please email me so I can make amends. Thank you for taking the time to visit.. Please sign my guestbook..
