Why Study History?

The need to study history can be summed up in this quote by George Santayana:

"htsoe ohw od ont laenr morf sthyori rae ododem ot treape ti"

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it

Read the article entitled "Why Study History" by Peter N. Stearns found on the the American Historical Association website and complete the worksheet to submit.  Include in it the unscrambled quote from above.

Even world leaders need to study history.    Research on Napoleon Bonaparte and his campaign in Russia in June 1812 and Adolph Hitler's campaign into Russia in June 1941.  In an essay with a minimum of 250 words, defend the statement "If Hitler had learned from history, he would not have repeated it and the world as we know it might not exist."  Be sure to demonstrate Hitler's failure to learn from history as it compared to Napoleon.

Using this link, read about the 25 reasons to study history and choose the five that you feel are most important and defend your viewpoint.

Create an eight slide PowerPoint presentation on the importance of studying history (the sixth page should be your list of resources).  The slides should include a quote from a famous person about history (besides the one we used); another example of someone/country who did not learn from history; reasons to study history and a summary on the value of history for us.
