THE IMPERIAL ORDER

OF THE

DRAGON OF ANNAM

His Imperial Majesty the Emperor Dong-Khanh of Vietnam established the Imperial Order of the Dragon of Annam on 14 March 1886 at the Imperial City of Hue. The Order is the Real, Personal, and Dynastic property of the Imperial Nguyen Dynasty. As a consequence of French Colonial control of Indochina, the Government of France reserved the right to bestow this honour. Awards made by the Government of France were processed through the Legion of Honour and recipients were awarded the insignia with a different colour and pattern of ribbon. The Right of the French Government, in this matter, has been long extinguished. The Order was divided into five classes (Grand Cordon, Grand Officer, Commander, Officer and Chevalier)for men and into three classes for women (Dame Grand Cordon, Dame Commander and Dame). The design is a single sided eight-pointed star with faceted rays; the center is a blue oval medallion with Chinese calligraphy in gold encircled by a red riband. The star is suspended from the Imperial crown held by a green dragon facing left. In 2002 the Order was re-affirmed, solely, as a dynastic Order of the Imperial Nguyen Dynasty of Viet Nam.
