WHITBY & WILL WATCH - 1841 ============================================================================================= Copyright (c)2001 Carol Whyte Auckland New Zealand WHITBY WILL WATCH Captain Lacey Captain Walker Surgeon Alexander McShane Surgeon ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The WHITBY & WILL WATCH sailed from Gravesend on 2 May 1841, arrived in NZ, around Oct 1841. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Taken from the NZ Company Ledger of the officers and men of the expedition who embarked by the 'Whitby' and 'Will Watch'. The expedition was sent by the NZ Company, their mission was to survey and choose a settlement site for later emigrants from England. Governor Hobson wanted the ships to go to Auckland where lands adapted to their needs could be easily obtained. Arthur Wakefield held out for the fertile lands of Banks Peninsula or Port Cooper. The NZ Company had told its prospective customers that they had purchased land in central NZ so couldnt settle for Auckland. Governor Hobson was determined to compel all migration to the 'seat of government' in Auckland. Col Wakefield, already in Wellington, told his brother, Arthur, to take a pilot (Mr FG Moore) to the western shores of Blind Bay with an interpreter (John Brooks) who had established a friendship with the Motueka maori. Where a survey was eventually made around 5 Nov 1841. Neither could accept the others proposal, so a third site was chosen near to Wellington, Nelson was Hobson's choice. ARROW (brig, Capt Geary) left Gravesend on 21 May 1841, arrived just before the two vessels.
