"If I Had Only Known" by Reba McIntyre
If I had only known it was our last walk in the rain,
If I had only known I'd never hear your voice again
You were the treasure in my hand
If I had only known it was my last night by your side
My baby, Kaela, was induced one month early after several months of being monitored for growth problems and cysts on her brain.
She weighed 4 lbs., 5 oz. at birth. Kaela was born with Moebius Syndrome and Diabetes Insipidus, both rare disorders. Moebius Syndrome is characterized by a paralyzed face. Kaela was unable to suck, smile or show any facial expression for that matter. She was born with crossed eyes, and we later found out that she was legally blind and had severe hearing impairment. She also had low muscle tone and could not sit up by herself. Doctors said that she had cerebral palsy. The Diabetes Insipidus altered the sodium in her body and caused her to urinate frequently, and so she required a shot once a day, every day.
At 12-1/2 months of age, Kaela gave up her will to live. After a sudden illness, Kaela was declared brain dead after becoming severely dehydrated, due to complications from the Diabetes Insipidus.
Kaela was, without a doubt, the best thing that has ever happened to me. She made me feel absolute, unquestionable, without a doubt - TRUE LOVE. I miss her more than anything and I would give my life to have her back. I can only get by knowing that she is no longer suffering. She is my HERO because her tiny body endured more pain than any grown man could ever handle. I love her for being the fighter that she was. Her footprints will always be embedded in my heart.
